Why is my foam cannon not foaming?

Thin, watery foam almost always traces to one of five causes, in this order: too little soap in the bottle, the ratio knob set too lean, a pressure washer flowing too little water, a clogged pickup filter or orifice, or a soap that simply is not formulated to foam. Work the list in order before blaming the cannon.

  1. Add soap: go from 1 oz to 1.5–2 oz per liter and retest before changing anything else.
  2. Open the ratio knob toward rich (usually clockwise to maximum, then back off a quarter turn).
  3. Check your machine's real flow: foam density tracks GPM, not PSI.
  4. Flush the cannon: warm water through the pickup tube and orifice clears soap residue that strangles siphoning.
  5. Swap to a snow-foam-specific shampoo if you are using a bucket-wash soap.

Does the orifice size matter for foam thickness?

Yes — it is the single cheapest foam upgrade. Most cannons ship with a 1.25mm orifice tuned for higher-flow machines.     Thin foam: richer knob first, then more soap. Too thick to rinse: lean the knob, then reduce soap.

  4. Lock it in and note it

    Write the working ratio on the bottle with a paint marker. Every soap has its own number; you only dial in once.

Can I use regular car shampoo in a foam cannon?

Yes, but bucket shampoos are formulated for lubrication, not suds, so foam will be thinner. Snow-foam-formulated soaps are built to foam at cannon dilutions. If you use a regular shampoo, start richer on both bottle mix and knob.

Is more soap always better foam?

No. Past a point, extra soap makes foam heavier and slower to rinse without adding cleaning power, and it wastes product. If the blanket clings for 30–60 seconds and slides slowly, you are at the right concentration.

Does water hardness affect foam?

Yes. Hard water suppresses suds and can require slightly more soap to reach the same blanket. If you have very hard water and chronically thin foam, a 1.1mm orifice plus a snow-foam soap usually closes the gap.
