PSI vs. GPM for Car Detailing: Which Specification Actually Matters?
In power washing specifications, you will constantly encounter two primary acronyms:
- PSI (Pounds per Square Inch): The measure of force at the nozzle outlet.
- GPM (Gallons per Minute): The measure of water volume delivered per minute.
Multiply the two together, and you get Cleaning Units (CU = PSI × GPM). While commercial pressure washer manufacturers love to advertise astronomical PSI figures to attract homeowners looking to strip concrete walkways, in automotive detailing, GPM is king.
Why Flow Trumps Pressure on Paint
Automotive clear coat is delicate. A harsh high-pressure, low-flow jet (e.g. 2,500 PSI at 1.1 GPM) acts like a knife:
- It concentrates kinetic energy on tiny areas.
- It provides very little water mass to flush away abrasive road grit.
- It forces you to make dozens of tight overlapping passes across vehicle panels.
By comparison, a moderate-pressure, high-flow machine (e.g. 1,000 PSI at 2.0 GPM):
- Floods vehicle panels with double the water volume.
- Flushes dirt particles safely toward the floor without scrubbing friction.
- Cuts your total rinse time in half.
- Produces thick, rich snow foam when paired with a quality foam cannon.
The Electrical Limit
In standard North American residential garages, you are restricted to a 15-amp or 20-amp 120-volt circuit. This limits an electric motor to approximately 1,800 to 2,000 watts of continuous electrical power.
Because of this physical power ceiling, electric pressure washer pumps must make a trade-off:
- High pressure with low flow (e.g. 1,800 PSI @ 1.2 GPM)
- Moderate pressure with high flow (e.g. 1,000 PSI @ 1.9 GPM)
For car care, machines engineered specifically around the latter configuration (like the Active 2.0) deliver a vastly superior user experience.
