DetailRig evaluates pressure washers under conditions identical to real-world vehicle detailing bays. We do not rely on factory claims stamped on marketing boxes.
Required Test Environment & Instruments
- Water Supply: Dedicated 3/4-inch municipal line with pressure regulator set to 55 PSI static pressure, delivering a minimum open-flow rate of 6.0 GPM.
- Electrical Feed: Dedicated 20A 120V circuit monitored by an inline Fluke power quality logger to record continuous running amperage, peak startup inrush, and voltage drop.
- Flow Measurement: Inline digital turbine flow sensor (Dwyer Instruments, calibrated within ±1.5% accuracy) measuring continuous GPM over three 60-second stabilized cycles.
- Pressure Gauge: Liquid-filled glycerin pressure transducer (0-3000 PSI) mounted directly before the spray gun inlet to capture actual working dynamic pressure under load.
- Sound Level Meter: Type 2 calibrated sound level meter positioned at ear level, exactly 1.0 meter from the machine housing in a semi-open garage bay.
Metric Scoring Criteria
- Measured Flow (GPM): Weighted 35%. Evaluates real-world rinse volume across standard 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 nozzle orifices.
- Working Dynamic Pressure (PSI): Weighted 20%. Evaluates stability between 900 and 1,200 PSI.
- Acoustic Signature (dBA & Pitch): Weighted 15%. Evaluates sound pressure and motor pitch frequency.
- Ergonomics & Form Factor: Weighted 15%. Shelf/wall mounting flexibility, weight, and hose reel usability.
- Serviceability & Fitting Standards: Weighted 15%. Brass head construction, replacement seal availability, and standard M22/quick-connect compatibility.
